Summer inspiration

Summer is coming and as I don't shop, I feel the need to sew new things. Here is what I have in mind in order to complete my wardrobe:

El verano se acerca y como no voy de compra, me entran ganas de coser cosas nuevas. Os voy a enseñar lo que me falta en el armario:

Lately, I've seen a lot of outfits in loud matching patterns. I am thinking of a jacquard jacket-shorts (with blazer style jacket) combination and maybe a bright red bouclé jacket-skirt one (with Chanel style jacket).

Se han puesto muy de moda estos conjuntos con estampados muy llamativos. Estoy pensando en hacer un conjunto chaqueta-shorts de jacquard (con chaqueta tipo blazer) y quizás uno chaqueta-falda de bouclé rojo vivo ( con chaqueta tipo Chanel).

Pencil skirts, so elegant! In floral, leather, geometrical prints...
Faldas lápiz, tan elegante! Con estampados de flores, piel, geometrico...

Retro and 50's looking dresses are my favourites. The feminine shape and prints are so flattering, I can't resist to add a few in my closet.

Los vestidos de estilo retro de los años 50 son mis favoritos. La forma femenina y los estampados favorecen mucho, no puedo resistir a añadir un par más en mi armario.

Shirt dresses are the perfect compromise between casual and dressed-up: the perfect dress for a summer day in the city or at the beach.
Con los vestidos-camisas se consigue el punto perfecto entre informal y arreglado: perfecto para un día en la ciudad o la playa.

How elegant can be a white dress? I love this fresh look for the summer.

Now, I don't think I will ever have time to make everything I plan, but I'll consider myself satisfied with two or three looks for this summer. And that way I can keep dreaming about I'd love to make if I had enough time...
No creo que voy a tener tiempo para hacer todo de esta lista, pero estaré contenta si hago dos o tres cositas este verano. Así puedo seguir soñando con lo que me gustaría hacer si tuviese más tiempo...

Dress for Salomé - Burda 145 07/12

I have just come back from France where I spent some time visiting my family. This is why the blog has been quite deserted, I am sorry. But it does not mean I have stayed away from the sewing machine, on the contrary...

Going to France meant meeting a new baby girl, my cousin's daughter, so I wanted to make something special for her. As Salomé will be 6 months old during the summer, I made Burda's dress 145 from the July edition of 2012 in a size 68 cm.

The dress was very easy to make, there are small pleats in the front and at the center back and gathers on the sides. I sewed french seams on the sides and shoulder seams and enclosed all the other seams with self-made bias-binding. I guess that will make the finish garment stronger to resist the washing machine (and it's looks so much nicer when all the seams are finished nice and tidy).

The collar and button-plackets are fused with interfacing.

As for the fabrics, both are cotton piqué. I first wanted to use only the one with dots but found that a contrasted bodice would look nicer. So I used an off-white one I had in my stash. As for the buttons, I had the perfect pink colour but they were too big so I ended up using these small dark grey ones that happened to match perfectly the dots on the fabric...

Acabo de volver de Francia donde estaba visitando a mi familia. Por eso el blog se ha quedado un poco abandonado, lo siento. Pero no quiere decir que me he quedado lejos de la máquina de coser, ¡Oh no! al contrario...

Para mi, ir a Francia queria decir que iba a conocer a un nuevo bebe, la hija de mi prima. Así que quería hacer algo especial para ella. Se llama Salomé y va a tener 6 meses este verano, así que necesita un vestidito hecho por su "gran tía" (o lo que soy yo respecto a ella). He elegido el modelo 145 del Burda de julio 2012 en talla 68 cm.

El vestido es muy facíl de hacer, tiene unos plieguecitos en frente y en el centro de la espalda y unos frunces en los lados. La falda tiene bastante volumen para ser cómoda y muy bonita, si os gusta este tipo de ropa para las niñas (a mi me encanta). He cosido los laterales y los hombros con costuras francesas y también he encerrado todas las otras costuras con cintas de bias hecho con la misma tela de topos. Así quería darle más fuerza al vestido para cuando se va a poner en la lavadora (y queda más bonito cuando está todo bien acabado).

El cuello y la solapa de los botones están reforzados con entretela.

Y las telas: las dos son de piqué de algodon. Al principio, pensaba utilizar solamente la tela con lunares (comprada en Sevilla, ¿os acordéis?) pero queda mucho mejor con el cuerpo blanco para dar un contraste. Tenía unos botones rosa perfectos pero me di cuenta que eran demasiado grandes así que usé estos pequeños gris oscuros que están a juego con los lunares de la tela ¡Que casualidad!

Oh Joanie - Mad Men Challenge II

Why make one Mad Men dress when you can make two?

¿Por qué  hacer un vestido de Mad Men cuando puedes hacer dos?  

This is actually my muslin for Peggy’s blue dress. The skirt is slightly different as I didn’t have enough fabric to try and make the whole skirt. But as my main concern was draping the over-skirt and fitting the bust, that’s what I focused on at first. But trying it on, I really like how it looked. So I figured out a way to finish the skirt: it folds over one side and opens as you walk. I finally decided to line it when I was happy with the fit and make a dress from what started as a muslin. 

Para ser exactos  esta es la prueba que hice para el vestido azul de Peggy. La falda es un poquito diferente ya que no tenía suficiente tela para intentar hacerla completa.  Pero como mi principal preocupación era drapear la sobrefalda y ajustar el cuerpo,  fue en esto en lo que me centré. Pero mientras lo probaba, me empezó a gustar como estaba quedando. Así que busqué la manera de acabar la falda:  se cierra por encima de un lado y se abre mientras andas.

Al final decidí forrarlo cuando ya estaba contenta con el resultado y ha quedado un vestido muy bonito de lo que empezó siendo una prueba.

The large rose print reminds me of one of Joan’s dress. The wiggle shape is also typical Joan. I guess I will have to sew a Betty dress for the Mad Men Challenge III as she’s the only main character I haven’t done (maybe because I am dressed like that everyday).

Tanto el estampado de rosas como la forma del vestido  me recuerdan mucho a uno de los que lleva Joan. Supongo que tendré que coser un vestido de Betty para el próximo Mad Men Challenge III ya que es la única de los personajes principales de la que aún no he hecho nada (quizás porque visto como ella todos los días!).
